Cor primária: Cor secundária: Descrição: This investigation challenges traditional views of architectural permanence by extending the concept of adaptive reuse to include both Existing Architectural Systems (EAS) and NonExisting Architectural Systems (NEAS). Through the lens of the defunct Ballsh Oil Refinery in Albania, it raises critical inquiries: What becomes of architecture after its physical structures are no longer? Can the essence of demolished structures persist within collective memory to influence future developments? This work broadens the conceptual framework of adaptive reuse, proposing a nuanced understanding of architectural sustainability and continuity.

Central to this analysis is the notion that architecture transcends its physical end, evolving into a new existence within the cultural and psychological realms of society. This perspective challenges the notion of purpose in architectural demolition, advocating for a dynamic evolution of form—from tangible structures to enduring memories. It posits that buildings continue to influence community identity and cultural history through NEAS, even absent their physical structures.

The role of the architect is critically reevaluated, portraying architects not simply as creators but as conductors who orchestrate a synthesis of historical narratives, environmental contexts, and social dynamics. This study poses essential questions: How can architects use the intangible heritage of a site to inspire future developments? What approaches allow new constructions to resonate with historical significance while meeting contemporary demands?

This transformation demonstrates how architectural fabric can be reimagined, weaving the site's historical essence with innovative, forward-looking designs. In conclusion, this exploration significantly enriches the discourse on architecture, illustrating how adaptive reuse can embrace the metaphysical dimensions of architecture. It underscores the architect's crucial role as a mediator and visionary, utilizing embedded histories and collective memories to craft new, contextually enriched architectural landscapes. This approach not only preserves the physical and metaphysical elements of architectural heritage but also redefines them, enabling a sustainable continuation of the site's narrative within the contemporary urban fabric.
